The Independent Environmental Monitoring Agency is a pubilc watchdog for environmental management of the BHP Billiton 'Ekati' Diamond mine™ located in the subarctic region of the Northwest Territories. We were established under the Environmental Agreement negotiated in 1996 and consist of Directors appointed by our Society Members as well as staff and an office in Yellowknife.
The Environmental Agreement is a legal instrument to ensure BHPB and the governments of Canada and the NWT to respect and protect land, water, wildlife and the land-based way of life essential to the well-being of Aboriginal Peoples. Welcome to the Agency website. We intend this website to be a valuable instrument in enabling us to meet our mandate in terms of providing a public repository of environment related information. Please contact our office if you have any suggestions for improving our website.
